A Look at the 2nd Amendment

Today, we will be doing a dive into the 2nd Amendment. What is it? Why does it exist? And most importantly, how does it apply today? We will be answering all of those questions. So join us, as we dive into the 2nd Amendment.

What is the 2nd Amendment?

The 2nd Amendment is, of course, one of the Amendments to the U.S. Constitution. It was written to ensure that each citizen could have a weapon. We will be going into how it applies today later on in the article.

Why does it exist?

The best answer to this question can be found in the Founding Fathers‘ own words: “O sir, we should have fine times, indeed, if, to punish tyrants, it were only sufficient to assemble the people! Your arms, wherewith you could defend yourselves, are gone…”, were Patrick Henryswords on the subject. “…to disarm the people is the best and most effective way to enslave them…”, said George Mason.

These quotes clearly show the Founders put this Amendment in place to prevent tyranny and to help the people defend themselves against tyrants and overthrow them if they get into power.

Now finally, how does it apply today?

The answer, you may think is complicated, but in all honesty, it isn’t. I believe the 2nd Amendment applies to all guns the citizens have access to. Why?

1. The Founders were wise men. They knew what they were doing, they knew extreme technological advancements would be made in regards to guns, in fact, they were already beginning to have been made. The Belton Flintlock was invented in 1777 and could fire 30-60 rounds in a minute. Indeed, it was offered to the Continental Congress.

2. The Founders, as you can see in their own words above, had very strong opinions on the protection of the right to bear arms. And finally,

3. District of Columbia V. Heller, a case that ascertained that every citizen should have the right to buy a modern handgun.

When you look at it, you can clearly see that the Founders intended that all guns would be protected by the 2nd Amendment.

I hope I have changed your mind on guns. And if not, I hope that you have learned something.
