TCR Reporter Smith sat down for an interview with the new chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, Rep. Alex. This is the transcript of the interview.
Smith: Firstly, congratulations on becoming the new DNC Chair. What inspired you to take the position?
Alex: My inspiration for taking this position was to make the Democratic Party more organized and actually let’s [sic] us do things that we weren’t doing in the past. I also wanted to hold meetings more frequently because in the 2 weeks after having the election we didn’t have a single meeting to talk about anything and there was no effort to try and schedule one in the first place.
Smith: What does your party plan to do between now and election season to prepare for the upcoming elections?
Alex: We plan to write some legislation and talk to other parties to see if they would like to work [with us] in the future.
Smith: As DNC Chair, are you supportive or opposed to continuing joint primaries with the Socialist Party?
Alex: Now that’s a good question sir, there’s two ways to look at this. Way one: is that they did endorse us and keep up their end of the promise by voting for the agreed person if you look at the polls. Way two: Is that we’re currently going through a law suit with them about the voiding of the election in District 3 and the Socialists are supporting the admins of this case when the Democrats are on the defenses of this case. To answer your question though I think that is something that needs to be decided by the party and not by just me.
Smith: Thank you for that answer. With Senator Krishna leaving the Democrats to join the Libertarians, Democrats are now unrepresented in the Senate. How does the party plan to return Democrats to the Senate in this upcoming election cycle?
Alex: I think we need to inform people more about what the Democrats are about, not that they’re ignorant about what’s going on. I think we just need to tell them who we are. The reason I lost the Senate race was due to party lines, there were too many Republicans in my district. We need to show people what it’s like to be a Democrat.
Smith: Final question of the evening. Why should voters choose Democratic candidates over the other parties in this upcoming cycle?
Alex: Because we represent the write, and no I didn’t misspell that. We are the doers: We write legislation, we get stuff done. The right can talk the talk but they don’t walk the walk. They only reason they’re in the majority is because there’s more of them.
Smith: Thank you so much for answering my questions Chairwoman Alex, and best of luck in the upcoming elections.
